A man gave his spare room on rent to women just so he could rape them, has been imprisoned for 18 years.

Maum Rashid, 30, of Tower Hamlets was jailed for 14 years at Wood Green Crown Court and was given an extra four years for being being found dangerous, totalling his sentence to 18 years.

Rashid will have to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

He was found guilty of one count of threatening to kill, one count of attempted rape, one count of assault by penetration, five counts of rape, one count of ABH actual bodily harm and one count of sexual assault on 10 March this year.

All the above offences are relating to three women aged from 19 to 29 and were committed between August 2016 to May 2017.

He use a website called SpareRoom where he advertised his spare room which he purposefully targeted women aged 18 to 45.

Once the victims were given the room, Rashid later offered them the room without any charge but in return for sex.

When the victims refused Rashid’s offer, they were sexually assaulted.

A 19 year old girl contacted Rashid on May 6th 2017 through SpareRoom website and arranged for viewing the flat. After the viewing, she moved in the next day where she was raped in the evening.

Rashid then told her if she tried to call the police or leave he will kill her.

The victim continued to scream and Rashid let her leave. She went straight to her friends house and reported him to the police.

The next day Rashid was taken into police custody where he was charged and remanded.

Once in custody, the police led an investigation with the assistance of SpareRoom. The police got in touch with around 3000 people who contacted Rashid regarding his room which resulted in two other female victims came forward.

A 29 year old female was raped by Rashid on 7th August 2016 in a similar circumstance as the first.

In September 2017, Rashid was in prison and had to be produced at court regarded a further allegation where he was charged and sent back to prison.

During the investigation, detectives seized Rashid’s mobile phone and found out there was another victim aged 22 years old. The police were informed that the victim was living with Rashid and suddenly left his house.

In October 2017 The police made contact with the 22 year old female. She told the officers she rented the room of Rashid and she was sexually touched on 4 April 2017 and then left his house.

Rashid was arrested and charged by the police.

He denied all the charges against him but was convicted after a two week trial in which all three female victims gave evidence.

DC Stav Georgiou-Moran, of the Met’s Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said: “Rashid’s vicious sexual assaults of these three women were appalling and left them with not only physical injuries but also psychological trauma.

“The women have shown great courage and bravery in giving evidence against Rashid, ensuring that he is made to answer for his actions.

“I want to encourage any person who has been the victim of sexual assault to tell those close to you and inform the police.”
